all three terms.

So the GCF so far is 4

The letter x appears in all three terms, 
the smallest power that appears is x3

So the GCF so far is 4x3

The letter y appears in all three terms, 
the smallest power that appears is y3

So the GCF is 4x3y3

So factor out 4x3y3

12x4y3 + 16x3y3 - 20x3y4

  4x3y3(3x + 4 - 5y)
