then

we get the left side of the equation 4x+8
.
From: "three times the number added to 5"
we get the right side of the equation: 3x+5
.
4x + 8 = 3x + 5
subtracting 3x from both sides:
x + 8 = 5
subtracting 8 from both sides:
x = -3
