Let x and (x+27) represent you and your mother's age NOW

Question states***

  (x+27) - 8 = 2(x+5)

Solving for x

  (x+27) - 8 = 2x+ 10

     9 = x, Your age now. 

     

CHECKING our Answer***  your mother is 36 Now  (9+27)

    36 - 8 =  28  = 2*14
