You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A coal train engineer makes a trip of 580 miles in a total of 12 hours. He travels the first part of the trip by car at 40 mph. The second part of the trip is by train at 60 mph. How far does he travel by car? How far by train?
..
let x=miles traveled first part of trip
then 580-x =miles traveled second part of trip
time traveled = distance/speed
x/40=travel time for first part
(580-x)/60=travel time for second part
total time traveled as given=12hours
12=x/40+(580-x)/60
LCD=120
1440=3x+1160-2x
x=1440-1160
x=280 miles
580-x=300 miles
ans:
The coal-train engineer traveled 280 miles by car and 300 miles by train.
