Question 413508: If 2 cars are moving towards each other from 6.6 miles away and car A meets car B in one hour and if the cars move in the same direction and car B overtakes car A within 11 hours then how fast is each car going? Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let = car A's speed
Let = car B's speed
Moving towards each other, just add the speeds
-------------------
In the same direction:
car A:
(1)
car B:
(2)
B overtakes A, so it is the one that has to make up
the 6.6 mi between them
Since is the same in both equations,
and, from above,
By substitution:
A's speed is 3 mi/hr
B's speed is 3.6 mi/hr
check answer:
going towards each other:
OK
same direction:
car A:
(1)
car B:
OK
