d = dan's age now.

joey is currently 3 years older than dan.

that makes j = d + 3

dan claims that the sum of their ages was 23 exactly 4 years ago.

4 years ago joey's age was j - 4
4 years ago dan's age was d - 4

4 years ago the sum of their ages was 23.

that makes j - 4 + d - 4 = 23

you can substitute d + 3 for j in this equation and solve for d.

from that you should be able to solve for j.
