Question 41178: I need to solve this log problem:

1) log( 8, (n-3)) + log( 8 (n + 4)) =1

I believe that the "logs" cancel out because they both have the same base. Then I dont understandwhat to do from there

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
log%28+8%2C+%28n-3%29%29+%2B++log%28+8%2C+%28n+%2B+4%29%29+=+1
log%28+8%2C+%28n-3%29%28n%2B4%29%29+=+1
%28n-3%29%28n%2B4%29+=+8%5E1
n%5E2+%2B+n+-+12+=+8
n%5E2+%2B+n+-+20+=+0
%28n+%2B+5%29%28n+-+4%29+=+0
n+=+-5 or n+=+4
You can not take a logarithm of a negative value, so negative five is an extraneous solution.
Answer: n+=+4
