Question 410466: b. The water line is given by the equation y+=+-2%2F3x-12 or y minus negative two over (three multiplied by x) minus 12.

Imagine you want to put a pink flamingo lawn ornament in your backyard. You want to avoid placing it directly over the water line in case you need to excavate the line for repairs in the future. Could you place it at the point (-4,-10)?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the equation to show the location of the water line (looking from above) is equal to:

y = (-2/(3x)) - 12

which looks like this after putting it through the formula generator:

+y+=+%28-2%2F%283x%29%29+-+12

if the point where you place the flamingo is not to be directly over the water line, then the point (-4,-10) cannot satisfy the equation.

To see if it does, replace x with -4 and solve.

y = (-2/(3x)) - 12 becomes:

y = (-2/(3*(-4)) - 12 which becomes:

y = (-2/-12) - 12 which becomes:

y = 1/6 - 12 which becomes:

y = - (11 + 5/16) which is not equal to -10.

the flamingo can be placed on that point without interfering with any work that has to be done on the water line.

a graph of the equation of y = (-2/(3x)) - 12 looks like this:

graph+%28600%2C600%2C-5%2C5%2C-20%2C20%2C%28-2%2F%283x%29%29-12%29

From the graph, you can see that, when x = -4, y is somewhere around - (11 + 5/6).

y = -10 is not on the line when x = -4.

From the graph, you can also see that there is something wrong with your water line.

It should be one line going across, but this graph shows it is broken up into 2 lines.

The equation has an asymptote at x = 0 which should not happen if you are talking about a water line going across the lawn or whatever it is being placed across.

I suspect your equation should be:

y = (-2/3)*x - 12

this equation looke like this:

y+=+%28-2%2F3%29%2Ax+-+12

the graph of this equation would look like this:

graph%28600%2C600%2C-5%2C5%2C-20%2C20%2C%28-2%2F3%29%2Ax+-+12%29

using this equation, let x = -4 to get:

y = (-2/3)*(-4) - 12 which becomes:
y = (8/3) - 12 which becomes:
y = -28/3 which is roughly equivalent to -9.333333333333

The flamingo is close to, but not on the line.

It appears that you can place it at the point (-4,-10) without interfering with any excavation of the water line.
