lw = 144
l = 144/w
Perimeter: 2l + 2w
2l + 2w = 52
Combine:
2l + 2w = 52
2(144/w) + 2w = 52
288/w + 2w = 52
288 + 2w^2 = 52w
2w^2 - 52w + 288 = 0
w^2 - 26w + 144 = 0
(w - 18)(w - 8) = 0
w+=+18 or w+=+8
Plug:
lw = 144
l18 = 144
l = 8
or Plug:
lw = 144
l8 = 144
l = 18
Since the length is longer, you would have: length = 18 and width = 8
