Passes through the point (-6,5) and is parallel to the line x-2y=8
how do I solve this? I don't understand it and need help with the steps on how to do it.. Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
Find the slope of the given line. You can either put the equation into slope-intercept form and then determine the slope by inspection, or you can just divide the coefficient on x by the opposite of the coefficient on y.
Parallel lines have equal slopes, that is:
So once you have determined the slope of the given line, you have the slope of the desired line as well.
Use the point-slope form of an equation of a line to write the desired equation:
where are the coordinates of the given point and is the calculated slope.
