Let x, 2x and (x+2) represent th elengths of the pieces

Question states***

 x + 2x +(x+2)= 12ft

Solving for x

     4x = 10

      x = 10/4 OR 2.5ft.  Pieces are 2.5ft, 5ft and 4.5ft
