Ivy is 8 years old because
I=B+8
B-3=2+[1/3(I-3)]

Beverly - 3 because it says three years ago
and same with Ivy - 3

so it's one third (I-3) which makes it
[(1/3)I - 1] + 2 = B - 3
[(1/3)I - 1] + 5 = B
Plug into other equation:
"[B+8=I]" so it's
[[(1/3)I - 1] + 5] + 8 = I
then solve
12 + [1/3]I = I
12 = 2/3 I
[3/2]12 = [3/2](2/3)I
8 = I
