Question 406840: A pasture is bounded by a river on one side. The farmer has 600 yards for enclosing a rectangular area of 40,000 square yards. Only three sides will be fenced, using the river as the boundary.
My teacher said they're only two ways to solve this and I must find both.
Thanks!

Hi
A pasture is bounded by a river on one side.
The farmer has 600 yards for enclosing a rectangular area of 40,000 square yards.
Let x represent the length opposite the river
x*w = 40,000
w = 40,000/x
2(40,000/x) + x = 600
80,000 + x^2 = 600x
x^2 -600x + 80,000 = 0
(x - 200)(x- 400)= 0
I. (x- 100)= 0 x = 100, the length and 250 are the widths (fence = 600)
II. (x- 400)= 0 x = 400, the length and 100 are the widths (fence = 600)
