DEAR LYN,
in everyday life many problens can be solves using ratios and proportions one good ratio /proportion is the work-hours and workmen ratio.for eg.if u wanna know that if it takes 5 workers to build a house in ten days how many workers do u need to complete the house in five days.this is inverse or indirect proportion since the more people the less the time therefore.
men:days
5 : 10
x :5
therfore x=10* 5 /5
therefore it takes 10 men to finish the work in 5 days.
