Question 405810: There are 36 Colored pencils, they are either red or green. for every green pencil, there are 3 red pencils. How many Red pencils are there?
I figured the answer to be:
27 = Red
9 = Green
The only problem is that I cannot figure out the formula to do so. I had to physically draw it out and cancel one figure per 3 sets.
Help?!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are 36 Colored pencils, they are either red or green. for every green pencil, there are 3 red pencils. How many Red pencils are there?
----
The ratio of green to red is 1:3 which is the same as x to 3x
where x is # of green pencils and 3x is # of red pencils.
----
Equation:
x + 3x = 36
4x = 36
x = 9 (# of green pencils)
3x = 3*27 (# of red pencils)
