Question 405662: I am having a hard time remembering this stuff from high school and could really use some help. My teacher gave us some r*t=d word problems but says the required work is a "data chart" So my problem is where to fit in the information from the word problem into a chart. The chart consists of 4 rows and 3 columns with r*t=d filling the three columns. Hope that makes sense.
The word problem is: Nedra and Latonya are 12 miles apart hiking toward each other. How long will it take them to meet if Nedra walks at 3mph and Latonya walks 1mph faster??

speed of Nedra: 3mph
speed of Latonya: 3+1 = 4mph
.
Let t = time walked
then
"distance walked by Nedra" + "distance walked by Latonya" = 12
3t + 4t = 12
7t = 12
t = 12/7
t = 1.714 hours
or
t = 1 hour and 43 minutes
