Question 405462: could someone show me how to do this? . Evaluate: |–27 + 14|
. True or False: |–8| + |3| = |–8 + 3|
. Evaluate: (–6)2 – 42

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 1. For the first one, whenever something is in absolute value bars, you need to remember that no matter what the answer on the inside is, you always will make it positive, if it isn't already.
So for your problem, all you do is do -27+14, which is -13. Since there are absolute value signs, just make that into a positive.
Your answer is 13. Simple as that.
2. Same thing for the true or false; when there are single numbers inside of the bars, just make them positive if they're no. If there are multiple numbers inside them, you've got to solve what's inside and then make it positive. It's like order of operations; the first step is what's inside the parentheses, everything else comes after that.
So your -8 would become 8, your 3 would stay the same, and your -8+3 would be -5, which you'd turn into 5.
8+3=-5
And that's not true, that's false.
3. (-6)2-42
Start with whatever multiplication or division comes first in a problem. Work your way left to right and don't begin with addition unless there's no multiplication or division.
-6x2=-12
Now just solve from there. If a number's in parentheses and another number is outside the parentheses, you multiply them together.
-12-42
When your subtracting negatives, it's basically the same thing as adding positives. So -12-42 is basically just 12+42, then you put the negative sign back on. 12+42=54.
Don't forget the negative sign!
-54
Hope this helps!
