how many gallons of a 3% salt solution must be mixed with 50 gallons of a 7% solution to obtain 5% solution?
:
Let x = amt of 3% solution required
:
.03x + .07(50) = .05(x+50)
:
.03x + 3.5 = .05x + 2.5
:
3.5 - 2.5 = .05x - .03x
:
1 = .02x
x = 1%2F.02
x = 50 gal of 3% required, to mix with 50 gal of 7% solution
