I believe you want to solve for h and w, not x.

In both problems, use the quadratic formula. The quadratic formula says that the roots of a polynomial ax%5E2+%2B+bx+%2B+c+=+0 are x+=+%28-b+%2B-+sqrt%28b%5E2+-+4ac%29%29%2F2a. However for the second problem you'll have to expand, and subtract 1 from both sides before applying the formula.
