Question 399682: Hi! Can you please help me with the following word problem: substitution?
John earned $240 in the summer by working at a fast food restraunt and baby-sitting. If he earned five times as much in the restraunt as he did baby-sitting, how much did he earn at each job?
I need an equation for it
Like, I sorta started it by saying F-fastfood and B-babysitting
So, would it be F+B=240?
I'm not sure if its right and I need to solve it too.
Thanks! :)

----------------
let f and b be the pay rate for food and baby-sitting
f = 5b
f + b = 240
-----------
Sub for f
5b + b = 240
6b = 240
b = $40
f = $200
----------
You were going the right way.

.
if you have two unknowns, you'll need two equations.
.
Instead:
Let x = amount earned baby-sitting
then from "he earned five times as much in the restraunt as he did baby-sitting" we have
5x = amount earned in restaurant
.
x + 5x = 240
6x = 240
x = $40 (baby-sitting)
.
restaurant:
5x = 5(40) = $200
