Question 399163: i need to solve this problem through factoring and not sure how to goa bout setting it up.
A llama farmer buys a roll of fence that measures 600 feet in length. FInd the dimensions of the rectangular are the fence can enclose if it contains 19475 square feet.
I know l X w = area Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
If there are 600 feet of fence, the perimeter must be 600 feet. So we know that 2 times the length plus 2 times the width is equal to 600. We also know that length times width equals 19,475 square feet.
So:
And then we can say:
And with a little algebra:
Which is a tidy little quadratic, quite factorable. One root is the width, and the other is the length.
