Question 395743: Please help me answer this question, I have mid year exams this week and this is the only problem I'm stuck on! Thank you!
"With a headwind, a plane traveled 1000 miles in 4 hours. With the same wind as a tail wind the return trip took 3 hours and 20 minutes. Find the plane's speed and the wind speed."
I started the problem, with:
p+w=200
p-w=240
and got p=220, but I'm not sure if thats correct, then from there I'm not sure how to continue.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi
D = r*t OR r = D/t
Note 3hr 20 min = 3 1/3 hr = 10/3hr
Great Set Up using the p + w and p - w
p + w = 1000mi/10/3hr
p - w = 1000mi/4hr
p + w = 300mph
p - w = 250mph
2p = 550mph
p = 275mph, planes' speed
275 + w = 300
w = 25mph, wind speed
CHECKING our Answer
275mph + 25mph = 300mph
