You can put this solution on YOUR website!
One car leaves NY, traveling at an average speed of 65 mph and arrives in NJ.
A second car travels the same route, but at 55 mph and takes an hour longer to get there.
1) How long did it take for each car to get to NJ?
Let t = time required by the faster car to get there
then
(t+1) = time required by the slower car
:
Both cars traveled the same distance, write a dist equation: dist = speed * time
65t = 55(t+1)
65t = 55t + 55
65t - 55t = 55
10t = 55
t = 55%2F10
t = 5.5 hrs travel time of the faster car
then obviously, 6.5 hrs travel time of the slower
;
:
2) how far is it away from NY?
Find the dist using the faster car
65 * 5.5 = 357.5 mi
Check this distance using the slower car
55 * 6.5 = 357.5 mi
