Question 395075: A pool is filling with water at a constant rate. After 10 minutes, the height of the water level is 8 inches. After 15 minutes, the water level in now at 18 inches. Using the points (10,8) and (15,18), find the rate of increase(slope) of the water level in the pool. Write your answer in sentence form and use appropriate units.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Because the pool is being filled at a constant rate, as plotted on a graph, the relationship between water level in inches as a function of time in minutes is a straight line through the given points,(10,8) and (15,18). For any straight line, the slope is equal to the (change in y)/(change in x) or in this case, change in inches/change in minutes. The slope can always be determined when at least 2 points on the line are known. Using the two points, the change in inches is equal to 18-8 =10, and the change in time is equal to 15-10=5.
The slope, therefore, is 10/5 or 2, that is, the water in the pool is rising at a constant rate of 2 inches per minute
