Since (8+5) to the second power is (8+5)(8+5), think FOIL!
First: 8*8 = 64 then add:
Outer: 8*5 = 40 then add:
Inner: 5*8 = 40 then add:
Last: 5*5 = 25 Total = 169.
Or make it easy on yourself (if permitted), add 8+5 = 13 and 13*13 = 169.
