Let x = the unknown number
It's square is x%5E2
given:
4x%5E2+-+x+=+3
4x%5E2+-+x+-+3+=+0
Using quadratic formula:
x+=+%28-%28-1%29+%2B-+sqrt%28+%28-1%29%5E2-4%2A4%2A%28-3%29+%29%29%2F%282%2A4%29+
x+=+%28+1+%2B-+sqrt%28+1+%2B+48+%29%29+%2F+8+
x+=+%28+1+%2B+7%29+%2F+8+
x+=+1
and, also:
x+=+%281+-+7%29%2F8
x+=+-3%2F4
The answer has to be 1, since -3/4 is not a whole number
