writing following in the form (x+a)^2+b 

 x^2-6x+7    |completing the square to obtain this format

 [x^2-6x] + 7 

 [(x-3)^2 -9] + 7

  (x-3)^2 - 2  a = -3 and b = -2 for the format requested
