The ratio of ducks to geese was 5 to 4. Four times the number of ducks was 40 greater than 3 times the number of geese. How many of each kind of fowl were present?

d / g = 5 / 4 ___ 4d = 5g

4d - 40 = 3g

substituting ___ (5g) - 40 = 3g ___ 2g = 40 ___ g = 20

substituting ___ 4d = 5(20) ___ d = 25
