Question 388490: Topic: Geometry
The question from my math book:
A triangle that has a 5-inch and a 6-inch side can be similar to a triangle that has a 4-inch and an 8-inch. find an example. Check that your example really is a triangle.
Thanks!!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let the unknown side lengths of the two triangles be x and y, respectively. We know that the ratio of two side lengths of the first triangle is 4:8, so x can either be 5/2, 3, 10, or 12. If x = 5/2, then 5/8 = 6/y --> y = 48/5. Therefore, {5/2, 5, 6} and {4, 8, 48/5} is one set of similar triangles. To find all sets of similar triangles, repeat the same process for x = 3, 10 (note that x = 12 creates a degenerate triangle).
