subtract equation 2 from 1 to eliminate x
16x-5y=-33
16x+y=-51
-----------
0-6y=18
y=18/-6=-3
substitute y=-3 in either of the equation. i'm using equation 1
16x-5y=-33
16x-5(-3)=-33
16x=-33-15
x=-48/16=-3
Thus, x=-3 and y=-3
