   Maria rode three miles per hour faster than hector    

Let x  and (x + 3mph) represent Hector's and Maria's speed respectively

D = r*t 

question states***

 2hr*x  + 2hr(x+3mph) = 24mi

Solving for x

   4x + 6mi = 24mi

      4x = 18mi

       x = 4.5mph, Hector's speed.  Maria's speed was 7.5mph    (4.5ph + 3mph)
