Question 38561: 1. Bob left Boston at 9:00am and drove to New Hampshire at 60 km/h. Mike left Boston at 11:00am and traveled the same route to New Hampshire. If both men arrived in New hampshire at 4:00pm, at what rate did Mike travel?

2. Two jets are traveling toward each other and are 4000 km apart. The rate of one jet is 100 km/h faster than the rate of the other. If the jets pass each other after 2.5 hours, what is the rate of the faster jet?

3. Mary drove from her home to a service station at 48 km/h. She returned home by bycycle at 16 km/h. The entire trip took 4 hours. How far was the service station from Mary's home?

4. A plane on a search mission flew east from an airport, turned, and flew west back to the airport. The plane cruised at 300 km/h when flying east, and 400 km/h when flying west. The plane was in the air for 7 hours. How far from the airport did the plane travel?

5. A motorboat can travel upstream on a river at 18 km/h and downstream at 30 km/h. How far upsteam can the boat travel if it leaves at 8:00am and must return by noon?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. Let x be his speed:
BOb's total time = 7 hours
Mike's total time = 5 hours
7(60)=5(x)
x=84
Hence, he travelled at 84mph.

2.One jet = x+100
Other jet = x
Equation:
2.5(x+x+100)=4000
5x=3750
x=
750
750+100=850
Hence, one jet is travelling at 850mph and another one is traveling at 750mph.

3.Letting x be the distance:
Equation:
x%2F48%2Bx%2F16=4
48%28x%2F48%29%2B48%28x%2F16%29=48%284%29
x+3x=192
4x=192
x=48
Hence, the distance is 48miles.

4.Letting x be the distance:
x%2F300%2Bx%2F400=7
120000%28x%2F300%29%2B120000%28x%2F400%29=120000%287%29
400x+300x=840000
x=1200
Hence, the distance is 1200

5.Total time of travel:
4 hours:
Equation:
x%2F18%2Bx%2F30=4
540%28x%2F18%29%2B540%28x%2F30%29=540%284%2F1%29
30x+18x=2160
x=45
Hence, it can travel 45 miles.
