Question 385513: Hello. It says to simplify 7(499) using the distributive property. Do I just multiply 7 x 499?
Also, if you have lines on either side of 18-6, how do you do that? It sort of looks like /18-6/ except the lines are completely vertical. Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It says to simplify 7(499) using the distributive property. Do I just multiply 7 x 499?
---
Distributive Law: a(b+c) = ab+ac
Your Problem:
7*499 = 7*400+7*99 = 2800+603 = 3403
------------------------------------------
Also, if you have lines on either side of 18-6, how do you do that? It sort of looks like /18-6/ except the lines are completely vertical.
---
Those are absolute value symbols.
|18-6| means "the distance from 18 to 6|
it is the same as |6-18|
Ans: 12
Notice that the result is never negative.
