we have to bring the terms on one side & the constants to the other side of the equal sign
shift 5 to the right side
add -5 to both sides
24x+5-5 = 12x+41-5
24x=12x+36
..
shift 12x to the left side
add -12x to both sides
24x-12x=12x-12x+36
12x=36
..
divide by 12 to keep only x on the left side
12x/12 = 36/12
x=3
