An equation is a statement that 2 things are equal - equal, equate, equation.
eg, 3x = 12 or x%5E2+-+x+-+6+=+0
Equations often contain one or more unknowns, or variables, as "x" in the examples above.
An equation can be 6 = 6, but that's trivial and pointless.

A solution to an equation is a value for which the equation is true, or a value that "fits."
3x = 12
x = 4 is a solution.
A solution isolates the variable on one side of the equal sign.
