The triangle-inequality says that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.


Observe that this is the same as saying that there can be no triangle in which the sum of the two other sides's lengths is greater than the length of the longest side.


Trying to draw an "impossible" triangle helps. You'll see pretty quickly that it can't be done.

Actually, the sum of any two sides of a triangle is always larger than the size of the other side of the triangle.
