You can put this solution on YOUR website! A plane whose air speed is 150 miles per hour flew from Abott to Blair in 2 hours with a tail wind.
on the return trip against the same wind, the plane was still 60 miles from abbot after 2 hours.
find the wind speed and the distance between abbot and blair?
:
Let w = the wind speed
then
(150+w) = effective speed with the wind
and
(150-w) = effective speed against the wind
:
Write a distance equation using both trips. (dist = time * speed)
:
Outbound dist = return dist + 60 mi
2(150+w) = 2(150-w) + 60
Divide thru by 2, results:
150 + w = 150 - w + 30
w + w = 150 - 150 + 30
2w = 30
w =
w = 15 mph is the wind speed
:
Find the distance
d = 2(150+15)
d = 2(165
d = 330 mi
:
Check this on the return trip distance
d = 2(150-15)
d = 2(135)
d = 270, which is 60 mi less as the problem stated
