You can put this solution on YOUR website!

.
The outside area would be
A=8%2A12=96
So the frame area is,
A%5Bf%5D=96-60=36
In terms of x, the frame area is
A=2%288x%29%2B2%28x%2812-2x%29%29
A=16x%2B24x-4x%5E2
A=-4x%5E2%2B40x
Equate the two,
-4x%5E2%2B40x=36
x%5E2-10x%2B9=0
%28x-1%29%28x-9%29=0
Two solutions:
x-1=0
highlight%28x=1%29
The second solution (x=9) would not make sense since the frame is only 8 inches wide.
