Question 375706: Subtract the complex expressions, and simplify.
(-4.5 + 4.4i) – (3.2 – 9.6i)
Guys I am really struggling with this class... I just can't seem to get anything to stick. Can someone please help me out? Found 2 solutions by jessica43, Fombitz:Answer by jessica43(140) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Since you are only add and subtracting in this problem, the first step to is to rewrite it by distributing the negative sign:
(-4.5 + 4.4i) - (3.2 - 9.6i)=
-4.5 + 4.4i - 3.2 - (-9.6i)=
-4.5 + 4.4i - 3.2 + 9.6i
Now you can combine like terms. Like terms are terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power. Only the coefficients of like terms are different. So in this case you can combine together terms that both have a variable of i -> add 4.4i and 9.6i. You can also add -4.5 and -3.2 because neither of them have variables:
-4.5 + 4.4i - 3.2 + 9.6i=
-7.7 + 14i
So your answer is -7.7 + 14i.
