Question 37546: Original: 4i^206+5(sqrt(-196))-8i^18
Step 1: simplify Sqrt... 5(sqrt(-196)) = 5(14i) or 70i... Correct???
Result: 4i^206+70i-8i^18
Here is where I am stuck... Can I combine the exponents (ie: 4i^206-8i^18 = -4^224)??? Also, what is the conversion to a 1 or -1 all about.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Original: 4i^206+5(sqrt(-196))-8i^18
4(i^206)+5(sqrt(196)i)-8 (i^2)^9
= 4 (i^2)^103 + 5(14i)-8(-1)^9
=4(-1)^103 + 70i - (-1)
=4(-1)+70i+1
=-4+70i+1
=-3+70i
