SOLUTION: A farmer wishes to have his soil at an average Ph (Mu = 8.1). He takes 15 random soil tests on his plot of land and receives the following readings. 6, 8.5, 7.9, 6.6, 8.8, 8.2, 6.

Question 375365: A farmer wishes to have his soil at an average Ph (Mu = 8.1). He takes 15 random soil tests on his plot of land and receives the following readings.
6, 8.5, 7.9, 6.6, 8.8, 8.2, 6.8, 6.7, 8.7, 8.8, 6.1, 6.3, 8.1, 8, 7.9
Does this data show that his Ph readings are too low? Use alpha = .05
Ok so I think I'm too old to learn this stuff. Going back to college at my age and trying to learn this is mind boogling. Please help by showing me how to solve this problem. Thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi,
*Note: Formula for the test statistic is t+=+%28x+-+mu%29%2F%28sigma%2Asqrt%28n%29%29
In this case n = 15
Entering the Data into an Excel worksheet column and applying the Data Analysis tool
found mu+=+7.56 and sigma+=+1.027 for this sampling.
t+=+%287.56-8.1%29%2F%281.027%2Asqrt%2815%29%29 = -.54/3.873 = -.139
P(t < -.139) = .4447 Or 44.47%
The test results would show that these Ph readings were well within the average
of mu = 8.1, at the 5% significance level
