This is true because the t-statistic looks like t=%28x-mu%29%2F%28s%2Fsqrt%28n%29%29. Notice how the population standard deviation is not present in the formula.


Compare this to the z statistic z=%28x-mu%29%2Fsigma. Now we see the population standard deviation.
