First we will rewrite the subtraction as the addition of the opposite. By making the entire expression additions we can then use the Commutative and Associative Properties to rearrange the order and grouping of the expression in any way we choose.
(-5.2 + (-5.3i)) + (-8.5 + 6.9i)
Now we will rearrange this so the real parts are grouped and the imaginary parts are grouped:
(-5.2 + (-8.5)) + (-5.3i + 6.9i)
Adding the like terms we get:
-13.7 + 1.6i
