Question 369564: Julissa can unload a ship’s cargo twice as fast as Chris. Together, they can unload the cargo in 4 hours. How long would it take each of them working alone to unload the cargo?
Hi,
Let x represent the amount of time it would take Julissa. Then the time it takes Chris would be 2x
Per hour is the Equalizer***
1/x + 1/2x = 1/4hr
Mulitplying each term on both sides of the equation by 4x so as all denominators = 1
4 + 2 = x
6hr = x , the time takes Julissa alone. Chris's time alone would be 12hr
checking our answer
1/6 + 1/12 = 2/12 + 1/12 = 3/12 = 1/4
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let C= Chris' Time
Let J=Julissa's Time = 1/2C
--
working together, each hour they complete 1/c+1/(0.5C) of the unloading. And each hour equates to 1/4 of the unlaoding.
--
1/c+1/(.5C)=1/4
-
1/c+2/c=1/4
3/c=1/4
c=12 by cross multiplying.
--
Therefore Chris takes 12 hours alone, and since J=1/2C=6 hours for Julissa
