Put the two equations into the same standard form:

2x-y=8

-5x%2By=3

Now if you add the two equations up, guess what will happen?

You will "eliminate" the y variable, and only be left with the x variable.

Technically, you will get:

2x-y%2B%28-5x%29%2By=8%2B3

-3x%2B0y=11

-3x=11

x=-11%2F3

Now we can just substitute this known x value back into either equation and find the y value.

2x-y=8

2%2A%28-11%2F3%29-y=8

-22%2F3-8=y

-22%2F3-24%2F3=y

y=-46%2F3

The solution to this system of equations should be x=-11/3 and y=-46/3 or the point (-11/3,-46/3)

The solution to a system of two linear equations will be a single point, unless the two lines are parallel or the two lines are actually the same line.
