Question 36645: accountant A can balance books twice as fast as accountant B. Together it takes 6 hours to complete a job. How long would it take A to complete the job alone?
please help
I came up with x+2x=6
3x=6
B=2 hours
A=x hours
x=2 hours for A
2x=4 hours for B
is this correct? Found 2 solutions by Paul, jorel1380:Answer by Paul(988) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! This answer is NOT correct. Since both accountants working together can finish the job in 6 hours, the proper format for this equation is 1/Accountant A's time + 1/Accountant B's time =1/6. Since B=2A (Accountant B is 1/2 as fast as Accountant A) the right equation reads: 1/A + 1/2A = 1/6. Solving for A we get
A=9; and thus B=2A=18. Check our work: 1/9+1/18=1/6.
