You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed in still air = x mph
speed of wind = y mph

600/(x-y)= 1.5
1.5x-1.5y=600
/1.5
x-y=400....................1
600/(x+y)= 1
600 = x+y...................2
add 1 & 2
2x=1000
/2
x= 500 --------- speed in still air.
Total distance = 1200 miles
speed = 500 mph
time when no wind = 1200/500
=2.4 hours

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let p = the speed of the plane with no wind
Let w = the speed of the wind
Against the wind:
d+=+%28p+-+w%29%2At%5B1%5D
With the wind:
d+=+%28p+%2B+w%29%2At%5B2%5D
given:
d+=+600 km
t%5B1%5D+=+1.5 hrs
t%5B2%5D+=+1 hr
---------------------
600+=+%28p+-+w%29%2A1.5
600+=+%28p+%2B+w%29%2A1
and
600+=+1.5p+-+1.5w
(1) 15p+-+15w+=+6000
600+=+p+%2B+w
(2) p+%2B+w+=+600
Multiply both sides of (2) by 15 and
add (1) and (2)
(2) 15p+%2B+15w+=+9000
(1) 15p+-+15w+=+6000
30p+=+15000
p+=+500
The plane's speed with no wind is 500 km/hr.
The problem wants to know how long it takes to go
1200 km at that speed
1200+=+500%2At
t+=+2.4 hrs
It takes 2 hrs and 24 min
