At the auto race one car travels 190 mph while another travels 195mph. How long will it take the faster car to gain 2 laps on the slower car, if the speedway track 2 1/2 miles long?
----
slower car DATA:
rate = 190 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = x/190 hrs
----------------------
faster car DATA:
rate = 195 mph ; distance = x + 5 miles; time = (x+5)/195 hrs
----
Equation:
time = time
x/190 = (x+5)/195
195x = 190x + 190*5
x = 190
-----
Slower car time = 190/190 = 1 hr
Faster car time = 195/195 = 1 hr

2 laps = 5 miles
The faster car gains on the slower at 5 mph (195 - 190)
5 miles/5 mph = 1 hour
