x^-.5 = 2
we can rewrite this using a positive exponent as follows...
1/x^.5 = 2
now multiply both sides by x^.5
(1/x^.5)*x^.5 = 2*x^.5
1 = 2*x^.5
divide both sides by 2
1/2 = 2*x^.5/2
1/2 = x^.5
squaring on both sides
(1/2)^2 = (x^.5)^2
1/4 = x
or if you need the answer in decimals it is
x = 1/4 = 0.25
