Two friends live 60 miles apart. The decide to ride their bikes to meet each other. Friend 1 rides at 21 mph. Friend 2 rides at 15 mph. They leave at the same time. How long will it take them to meet and how far did each one ride?

distance = 60 miles
friend1 =21 mph
friend 2= 15 mph.
they are riding towards each other
so speed = 21+15 = 36 mph
..
t=d/r
t=60/36
=1.66 hours
d=rt
friend 1 distance = 1.66*21=35 miles
friend 2 = 25 miles

The key is that if they will always meet at
the same time on an observers watch.
since they leave at the same time, each
friend's equation of motion has the same t, elapsed time.
given:
friend 1:
d+=+21t
Friend 2:
60+-+d+=+15t
By substitution:
60+-+21t+=+15t
36t+=+60
3t+=+5
t+=+5%2F3 hr
It takes 1 hr and 40 min for them to meet
friend 1:
d+=+21%2A%285%2F3%29
d+=+35 mi
friend 2:
60+-+d+=+15%2A%285%2F3%29
60+-+d+=+25 mi
friend 1 goes 35 mi and friend 2 goes 25 mi
